Reiki and the Paranormal
By Carrie Kerns
Most people have a difficult time believing in things that cannot be seen with the naked eye. People believed the world was flat since that was how they saw it. People would’ve thought you were crazy if you were to tell them there was millions and millions of small individual cells functioning together to create what we know as the human body or that there were tiny things not seen with our eyes called germs and viruses that could cause illness if it had not been proven with the creation of the microscope back in 1671. That was what happened with Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek when he first told people of microorganisms in water. People were skeptical and doubtful until he was able to prove it by creating the microscope. So what does that have to do with the paranormal and Reiki? If you haven’t already guessed, all things in the paranormal have not been scientifically proven and are still a source of doubt and skepticism. The realm of the paranormal is vast and there are many different thoughts, beliefs, and theories about many different paranormal beings, creatures, and occurrences. What I am going to write about is the theory on Reiki and the paranormal theory of spirits and haunting.
First, it is important to understand what Reiki is. An ancient Japanese healing art, Reiki is a combination of two Japanese words. “Rei” translated into “God’s wisdom or the Higher Power” and “Ki” which is translated into “Life force energy”. This together makes Reiki translated into “Spiritually guided life force energy”. It was founded by Dr. Mikao Usui and had been used by the Japanese as treatment for human ailments and the popularity and belief of Reiki being used in conjunction with medical treatment to help with the healing process of the human body and spirit has been rapidly spreading to other countries outside of Japan. Reiki is a taught method of energy healing which abilities are passed by the Reiki master through an “attunement” which allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” to improve one’s health and enhance the quality of life. It is important to understand that Reiki in itself is NOT a religion and one does not have to believe in any specific God. It is an understanding that this “life force energy” is from a “Higher Power” whether it be your God or the positive energy from the universe itself and is used with good intentions.
So, now that you know what Reiki is, how can the belief of transferring energy to a human help them? This is where we start to get into some of the paranormal realm. Psychics claim to be able to see an invisible energy field around every living thing which is called an “aura”. People have claimed to have seen anything from just a small outline around things to seeing actual colors with movement surrounding living things. The Aura has been claimed to be photographed and I personally saw it on a live feed video screen while attending a holistic fair. It was really interesting – they had many two colored vials on display and people were to look at the vials and just think about which two colors stood out the most for them. Once you had the two colors in mind you stood in front of a camera which on a TV screen showed a colored aura around you. I remember clearly picking blue and green which were the two colors around me. A friend of mine also stepped into the camera which her two colors were yellow and pink and you were able to observe the movement of the two different colors as we stood together. I cannot explain how they could have done then without anyone knowing which colors we picked. It is believed that our body consists of 7 Chakras, which are believed by some to be openings for life energy to flow in and out and around our Auras. There are 7 Chakras that are linear on the body and some also claim the actual Aura as being our 8th Chakra. Chakras are not visible to the human eye but some trained energy workers and psychics claim to be able to see it. It is the aura and these Chakras that are being treated when receiving a Reiki treatment. When observing a Reiki treatment on an individual you will see the Reiki practitioner either hover their hands over the client’s body or use gentle touch. When our Chakras and energy is not in alignment or is blocked it can cause illness and ailments. By unblocking these energy openings and by transferring positive energy from a higher power to the client to equalize their Chakras and energy of the aura it is believed that healing can begin.
I do have to admit, when I first heard about Reiki I had thoughts of Star Wars with “using the force” crossing my mind and I was very skeptical. It was while attending a health fair for the medical profession I came across a couple of Reiki practitioners. I had the start of a migraine forming from being in class all day and I had no Ibuprophen which is usually the only thing that helps my headaches from turning into full blown migraines if taken early enough. They were giving free 5 minute trial sessions away and I told them I had a headache and if they could help I would appreciate it. Although it did not completely get rid of the headache, it dulled it tremendously. It was enough for me to make my 20 minute ride home so that I could take some ibuprophen and kept me from getting a migraine. That was a little impressive to me but it was when I saw someone in an intensive care unit receive it where I became fully convinced. There was a gentleman who was in a medically induced coma and on a ventilator and was attached to cardiac and respiratory monitors who was receiving Reiki treatment by an APRN who was also a Reiki Practitioner. Prior to his treatment his heart rate was up around 120-130’s and his respiratory rate was high. During the Reiki treatment I watched his heart rate come down to a normal rate in the 90’s and his respiratory rate also come down to a normal rate. Although it did not permanently last after the therapy was done and slowly but surely it began to rise with time, it normalized during the treatment and for a period of time afterwards with no medications or other interventions, just Reiki. I was sold.
Reiki has also been utilized in the cleansing and bringing forth of positive energy into homes which is also known as a cleansing of the home. This has been utilized alone in a cleansing using a power symbol that was learned or can be used in conjunction with saging or any other type of cleansing one can do to a home. The theory is that you are bringing in positive energy into the home and pushing out negative energy. One cannot see this energy being channeled which creates a lot of skepticism and doubt. I have even read on the internet articles debates where people claim that certain religions should not participate in Reiki with risk of not knowing where the energy that is being channeled is coming from. If spirits are theorized as being sources of energy, and Reiki is used to promote energy healing then is it possible to use Reiki to heal these spirits who may be haunting a location? If there is a negative energy or spirit within a home, can the use of Reiki and the transfer of positive life force energy push out the negative energy or spirit? Can putting positive energy within a client’s home also help make the client feel less anxious? On some of the investigations I have been on I have performed Reiki as a way of cleansing a home and the clients have always claimed that the home environment felt better afterwards and they have always had a positive experience with it. I would suggest for anyone who is given the opportunity to try a Reiki session to open yourself up to the concept even if difficult to believe and let it work for you. It is a very relaxing and calming experience and one that I am sure will open your eyes to the theory of energy healing and Reiki.
